Shower and exfoliate 24 hours prior to your Brushtan with a basic loofah or a small bath towel. It does not (and should not!) be too aggressive so as not to irritate your skin. It is simply to slough off as much of your old dead skin cells from the surface as possible to prepare your new skin to receive the tanning solution. Please DO NOT use an oil based exfoliant as this creates a lasting residue that can affect your tan.
Make sure to wear or bring dark, loose-fitting clothes with you for after your leave. While your tan is processing you want to avoid rubbing against your skin or any elastics or tight-fitting clothes or shoes. Flip flops are a good idea. Bring an umbrella too in case it rains! It is Florida and we know how unpredictable our weather can be!
After showering it is best NOT to apply any lotions, oils, perfumes, or anything that can act as a barrier.
Shaving should be done about 12 hours before your appointment and please do not use a razor with a moisture strip attached as that can also leave behind a residue on your legs. Shaving right before your tan session can result in streaks or pores absorbing too much solution and causing spots. Don’t worry about hydration after the exfoliation because all the Brushtan sunless solutions contain skin nourishing ingredients, so after your first rinse your skin will feel smooth and supple.
Manicures, pedicures, and waxing should all be done 48 hours prior to your appointment. If you wax too soon before it can cause spotting from the solution pooling in the pores of your skin, and if you wax WITH the tan, it will strip it right off. The same applies to eyebrow treatments, facials, or any body work treatments that can potentially exfoliate the outermost layer of the skin.
Monica Gordon, your tanning specialist, is a licensed Cosmetologist and very well versed on color theory and the science behind DHA tanning, so you are in excellent hands. She will make sure the tanning solution she chooses for you will be perfect for your skin type and your desired result. Her approach is "less is more" with sunless tanning, and she will make sure to give you results that look very natural and glowing rather than over-processed or brassy as can happen when an emphasis on customization is not a priority. At Brushtan, your results are customized and your satisfaction is Monica's TOP priority!
When the exact time given to you to rinse arrives, please do not wait longer! Rinsing at the required time is very important to achieve optimal results.
Please DO NOT use bar soap or especially DOVE products!
Use your hands in firm, circular motions to rub off all the bronzer. Make sure to be as thorough as possible. Rinse with lukewarm water. Focus your attention to the sides of your lower legs, your inner thighs, behind your arms, or any place the bronzer may have a tendency to stick.
PLEASE NOTE: When the bronzer is not fully rinsed off properly at first rinse, it can look patchy or streaky. If this occurs, no need to worry, it is probably just a little bronzer residue and will come off with your second shower.
Don't worry, that is normal! The bronzer has two purposes. It acts as a guide for application, and also has pigments in it that leave a hint of stain behind. This is used to counter act any unwanted brassy tones caused by the DHA tan. The bronzer is NOT what actually tans you, that is the magic of DHA which is a naturally derived chemical made from sugar cane, or sugar beets. It reacts with the top surface level of your skin to create that golden hue. The bronzers may contain violet pigment, green or blue that based on color theory, will balance out the resulting color based on your underlying pigment and your desired results. This is where a skilled tanning specialist comes in to choose your customized cocktail!
Once the bronzer is rinsed away and the light staining is left on your skin, the DHA, which is clear, is already on your skin preparing to work its magic. It requires about 12 hours to develop and is at an optimal tan in 48 hours.
When the DHA reacts with the outer layer of your skin and begins creating the magic, you may detect an odor that is described differently by different people. Some say it smells like maple syrup. Others say it smells like french fries, while other people say it smells like buttermilk biscuits. The good news, is that it is completely normal and is a very commonplace with DHA tanning, and has nothing to do with the brand of solution or how it smelled going on your skin. If you aren't a fan of the odor, don't worry. It will go away soon once the DHA has completed its magic. By your second shower the odor will be hardly noticeable. A small price to pay for a gorgeous (and safe) tan!
YES you can! Brushtan carries beautiful and amazing quality, skin nourishing tanning solutions that are completely DYE FREE and use Naturally derived Caramel as a bronzer. Caramel acts as a beautiful guide for application but does not stain the skin. The resulting tan is only what the DHA produces based on percentage and time left on the skin as per the recommendation of your tanning specialist. This is a GREAT option for anyone who has very sensitive skin, allergies, or simply wants the cleanest and most natural tanning solution on the market!
Please wait at least 12 hours after your initial rinse before applying any kind of moisturizer or lotion. There are several sunless tan-friendly lotions that are over the counter that Monica will suggest to you at your appointment, but the best approach is to purchase a specific tan-safe moisturizer. Moisturizing your skin often is the key to prolonging your Brushtan, so moisturizing twice daily will give you great results. It’s also important to stay hydrated and drink lots of water throughout the day. and to avoid any harsh to come into contact with your skin through the duration of your beautiful tan.
Please wait 24 hours after your Brushtan to work out (minimum a12 hours) and it's best to complete your second rinsing off prior to working out to make sure all the bronzer is removed. If you tend to perspire a lot or you run or work out a LOT, then sweating may be a factor for the duration of your tan. Ask Monica about a special tanning solution that combats this issue!
Dihidroxyacetone, or DHA is FDA approved. It only penetrates the outermost layer of the skin and does not pose a threat to entering the bloodstream in any concerning amount. It is approved to be usde topically and not meant to be injested or inhaled, which is why the Brushtan application method is the safest way to receive a sunless tan since it will not be aerated into an inhalable mist as much as during a classic spray tan. There is no evidence that DHA is harmful, but it is recommended that you should consult with your physician before making an appointment.
Yes you can be in the sun after your sunless tan appointment. BUT it is very important to remember that just because you "look" tan, doesn't mean you are safer from harmful UV rays that before your sunless tan. Treat your skin as if you are the same as you were PRE tan and use sunscreen! Monica will suggest some sunless tan friendly sunscreen options for you.
When arriving to your appointment, wear loose fitting, dark clothing with no elastics (unless you are keeping a bra and underwear or bikini on of course. During your Brushtan session, you can wear underwear, swimwear, or nude. Whatever you are comfortable with and keeping in mind the tan lines you would like to see (or not see!) Just make sure everything should be dark clothing. Bronzer will usually come out in the wash but it's best to avoid staining fabric when possible. Please be very careful with leather seats! and purses as those may stain permanently! Flip flops are best to wear to an appointment to avoid any tight shoes rubbing your skin.
Your tan will be developed in 12 hours after application, then will achieve optimal depth and glow in about 48 hours. So Thursday is your best bet for a Saturday event. If you can only make it four days prior though, your tan can last at least a week or more with care and consistent moisturizing. Ask Monical about a tan extender that can help when prolonging a tan is needed!
The minimum age is 18 to receive a Brushtan. Monica can give spray tans (mobile service only) to teens with parental consent and presence at the session.
One of the few downsides may be this may happen sometimes, but don't worry. Even as the days progress and your skin sheds naturally, the stained skin cells may show up as stains on your sheets or light clothing. Don't worry, the stains will come out in the wash. If possible, throw on a dark sheet to avoid the extra laundry!
The duration of your tan really depends on your own personal skin chemistry and how you take care of it. With proper maintenance, such as being careful not to apply products that can erase the tan or soaking in water too long, your tan can last between 5 to 10 days (with some lasting even longer!) On average, people notice their tan beginning to fade after about 4-7 days. Moisturizing and staying hydrated are two important factors to support the life of your sunless tan. Brushtans are applied using only the BEST solutions on the market today with the longest staying power.
